ARVO…where the greatest minds meet

What a blessing to be a part of ARVO…where the greatest minds meet. Professors, investigators, industry representatives, academics and of course trainees….It is not just about sharing our knowledge but we greet each other and celebrate the fact that we are all in this together. Some might ask “What is it that we are all in together?”  “The Fight”, I would say, the fight against the worst disability that human beings have suffered from – the loss of vision. We all know, deep inside, that patients, those human beings who are suffering and who pin their hopes on ‘us’, are the reason we are in this job… What a privilege to have with such a responsibility! What patients are looking for in us is ‘hope’…a hope to find a better treatment… and ARVO is where all fighters meet… what an honour to be a part of this!

My preparation for ARVO is as follows:

(1)  Download the e-book from following link

I love my iPad…it does make a big difference in terms of being more organised and effective. I find I can plan much better ahead of the meeting.

(2)  Search and get familiar with presentations in my field

(3)  Learn about keynote lectures. It is really a pleasure to listen to and meet in person some of the most successful scientists.

(4)  Find my friends’ presentations. It is such a good feeling to catch up with old friends and colleagues.

(5)  As an academic researcher, we often forget about the importance of industry in the development of treatments. I always look for industry scientists to make friends with and to note for collaborations later.

(6)  Writing grants/writing papers/clinical science are my favourite sessions. I always try to fit in these sessions in the schedule.

Don’t forget to have fun! It does not matter what kind of person you are, whether you are looking for a drink and heading to the town for some clubbing! Or enjoying the lovely sunrise and sunset on the beach… for me, it is an opportunity to get to know your friends better, perhaps over a cup of coffee or a lovely meal nearby…Good luck and I will be back with more updates !
