Food Options in Mount Vernon

Besides Fells Point, Mount Vernon is another historic district that is worth a visit. The cuisines offered here tend to be more diverse and “ethnic” if you will. My recommendations are as follow.

Helmand
806 North Charles St.

Helmand has been a Baltimore institution for decades. Afghani restaurants are uncommon and definitely rare to find outside of the biggest cities in the United States. If you have never tried Afghani cuisine before, Helmand is a good place to start. My personal favorites are: Kaddo Borwani (pan-fried and baked baby pumpkin), Aushak (dumpling filled with leeks and ground beef) and any of the lamb dishes offered there.

Khun Nine Thai
804 N Charles St.

Food.jpgIt’s a tiny tiny place that only seats about 15 people. Since relatively few people have tried it, it doesn’t rank highly on any of the major review sites, such as Tripadvisor, Yelp or Open Table. However, if you are craving for Thai food, this is a must-try. Besides the usual pad thai and fried rice dishes, it also serves several very interesting and authentic northern Thai specialties that are hard to find in the U.S., such as Thai sausage with Thai herbs, Kao Soi (egg noodle in a yellow curry broth with chicken) and mango stick rice. The other two Thai places in the area, Thai Landing (1207 N Charles St.) and Stang of Siam (1301 N Calvert St.), are more spacious and offer very respectable Thai food as well.

Other honorable mentions in this area include Cazbar (Turkish; 316 N Charles St.) and Kumari (Indian, Tibetan and Nepalese; 911 N Charles St.).
