Justine R. Smith is Professor of Eye & Vision Health at Flinders University, and Future Fellow of the Australian Research Council. She holds Bachelor Degrees of Medicine and Surgery from University of Adelaide, Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and Doctor of Philosophy from Flinders University. Justine heads a translational research laboratory, which focuses on the role of the ocular vascular endothelium in inflammatory and neovascular eye diseases, and development of therapeutics that specifically target the ocular endothelium. The program is presently funded by the Australian Research Council, the Australian National Health & Medical Research Foundation, and the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Justine holds a number of prominent international positions within the eye and vision research, and ophthalmology communities. She is 2013-2014 ARVO President. She is an International Councillor of the International Ocular Inflammation Society, and has been elected to membership of the International Uveitis Study Group. She sits on American Academy of Ophthalmology Council, and she is a member of the Advisory Committee to the Board of Directors of the International Council of Ophthalmology, representing Research. She serves on the Executive Committee of the American Uveitis Society, and is currently President-Elect of the Society. She is an editorial board member for multiple journals, including Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci. Justine runs a weekly uveitis clinic, managing patients with inflammatory eye disease, and she participates in multiple international initiatives aimed at improving clinical outcomes for patients with these conditions.
