Bio

Prof Govindasamy Kumaramanickavel works on ocular genomics and epidemiology. In ocular genomics he is primarily involved in gene mapping, mutational screening and association studies including genomewide in complex and Mendelian ophthalmic diseases. He was involved in childhood blindness, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy epidemiological and genetic projects comprising of 50,000 subjects. Was a key member of a successful ocular gene mapping team at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Later, joined the Department of Genetics at Sankara Nethralaya, India and worked there for over a decade and was elevated as Deputy Director of Research and Executive Officer, Medical. He has done genetic counselling for over 10000 patients and teaches medical genetics. He graduated in medicine from the University of Madras, Madras Medical College, India and subsequently in MD (Physiology). As Fogarty Visiting Associate, Dr. James Fielding Hejtmancik trained him in the Ophthalmic Genetics & Clinical Services branch, National Eye Institute, National Institute of Health, USA. He was Research Fellow, Ocular Gene Mapping Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry, University of Otago, New Zealand, where he was trained by Dr. Michael John Denton. During the same period at Otago, Dr. Robert F Mueller trained him in genetic counselling. Currently he is the Research Director at two premier ophthalmic institutions of India – (a) Narayana Nethralaya, Bangalore and (b) Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Mumbai. He is a visiting faculty at the National Eye Institute, USA; Chinese University of Hong Kong and several universities in China. He has received funding for research projects from National Institutes of Health, USA, INSERM, France and Indian grant agencies (DBT, DST, ICMR). He has over 120 peer-reviewed publications including articles in Nature Genetics.
