Dr. Jeng is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He did his undergraduate work at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, followed by medical school at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then completed his ophthalmology residency training at the Cole Eye Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as Chief Resident in his last year. This was followed by fellowship training in cornea, external diseases, refractive surgery, and uveitis at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation/University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He spent the first 5 years of his career at the Cole Eye Institute. He subsequently returned to UCSF as Associate Professor, and then Professor of Ophthalmology, and he was also the Co-Director of the UCSF Cornea Service, Chief of the Department of Ophthalmology at the San Francisco General Hospital, and Director of the Francis I. Proctor Foundation/UCSF Cornea Fellowship Program.

Dr. Jeng’s clinical interests are in the medical and surgical treatment of cornea and external diseases. Specifically, he is interested in managing the diseased ocular surface and in advanced surgical cornea techniques including anterior and posterior lamellar keratoplasty, keratoprosthesis implantation, and femtosecond laser applications for corneal surgery. He is also interested in microbial keratitis and ocular manifestations of systemic diseases.

He currently has an active, federally-funded, research program in ocular surface diseases. Dr. Jeng’s other research interests include eye banking and epidemiology of ocular diseases in the underserved populations. He has published extensively in all areas of cornea and external diseases.

Dr. Jeng is also actively involved in training fellows, residents, and medical students. He is an active member on numerous committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and he serves on the editorial boards of 3 ophthalmologic journals. He also participates in activities for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
