Bio

Dr David Sousa graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon in 2013. He completed his Ophthalmology specialty training in Portugal, followed by a vitreoretinal fellowships in Manchester, United Kingdom and Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Sousa currently works as a vitreoretinal surgeon at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne and also consults in St John of God Hospital, in Geelong.

As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Sousa is involved in multiple research projects at Centre for Eye Research Australia and The University of Melbourne, in the fields of retinal imaging, artificial intelligence, surgical clinical trials and innovative surgical devices. 

Dr Sousa has authored numerous peer-reviewed research publications and is a regular speaker at both national and international conferences. He obtained his PhD degree (Hons.) in April-2021, and continues to lecture in his alma mater, the University of Lisbon.

Dr Sousa specialises in the treatment of retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, diabetes eye disease and age-related macular degeneration.
